Charlottesville365; Virginia Sales Tax Holiday October 8-11

October 4, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Every year, Virginia enjoys a four day sales tax holiday on different items and supplies. It always falls on the Friday (through the weekend) of the second Monday in October. This year, it will fall on Friday October 8 – Monday October 11, 2010. This is a great time to make some EnergyStar purchases if you’ve been considering updating the systems or appliances in your home! Note that it covers several appliances, plus HVAC systems, as well as much smaller items- fans, florescent light bulbs, faucets, toilets, etc.

From the Virginia Department of Taxation, Virginia.gov site;

October Sales Tax Holiday: Energy Star and WaterSense Qualified Products

When: This four-day holiday begins on the Friday before the second Monday of October each year. The 2010 holiday will take place Friday, October 8, 2010, through Monday, October 11, 2010.

What’s Exempt: During this period, purchases of certain Energy Star and WaterSense qualified products purchased for non-commercial use and costing $2,500 or less will be exempt from sales tax. The exempt Energy Star items include dishwashers, clothes washers, refrigerators, air conditioners, ceiling fans, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and programmable thermostats that carry the Energy Star designation. The exempt WaterSense items include bathroom sink faucets, faucet accessories, and toilets. Retailers may also choose to absorb the tax on other items during the holiday period, but they are responsible for paying the tax on those items to the Department of Taxation.

Return of the Pesky Stink Bug

September 22, 2010 by · 2 Comments

It’s right around this time of the year that I start seeing people mentioning a bunch of creepy looking brown bugs infesting their homes in Charlottesville.

Welcome… the Stink Bug!

Appearance

I always describe the stink bug as a little brown bug that looks prehistoric and/or armored and ready to go into battle. These guys are creepy. Every fall they descend upon Charlottesville, and are drawn into houses because of the temperature change between the indoors and outdoors.

Check out the Wikipedia article here.

What do they do?

Well, as best I can tell, they walk in circles and circles around the edge of the ceiling. They don’t seem to harm much. They don’t seem to have any interest in food or clothes, but just in being a nuisance.  They seem to sneak in through doors that are left cracked open, or small tears in window screens that they are able to weasel their way through!

How do you get rid of them?

Our experience has been that the only way to get rid of them is time! Usually after 2-3 weeks they completely disappear and stop haunting our house. In the mean time, you can shoo them out, and I have also heard of people vacuuming them up, but I am not endorsing that as my recommendation!

Do they stink?

I haven’t found them to be particularly bad.  I think if they are smashed they release a smell that is something like almonds, but I have yet to really experience this.

I’d love to get some feedback on this- has anyone had a less pleasant experience with them?

Charlottesville 365; Charlottesville Four Miler and Women’s Four Miler Training Program

May 29, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Get Moving!

The Charlottesville Women’s Four Miler will take place again on Sept. 4, beginning at 8 a.m., and on June 19, thousands of women will begin their training with the Women’s Four Miler Training Program (W4MTP). This is the 17th year for the training program, which prepares ladies to run (or walk) the race by participating in 12 consecutive Saturdays of group training and coaching at the University of Virginia track. As well, many surrounding counties hold satellite training exercises (see list at end of post). Previous running experience is not necessary! Cost for the training program is $20 or $15 for Charlottesville Track Club members. Mother and daughter teams are $30 (age 14 and under) who are going to train together. My 12-year-old daughter will be training (and running) the race with me for our first time.  The program is every Saturday from June 19 – August 28 at 7:30 a.m. at UVA Track.

High Goals
Entrants to the Four Miler collect donations for the Breast Care Program at the University of Virginia Cancer Center. Last year the more than 3,000 women participants raised more than $330,000. This year, according to the Charlottesville Women’s Four Miler website, the goal is $400,000. The site says that last year’s proceeds went toward care kits specially designed for the newly diagnosed breast cancer patient, funding to cover DNA testing for an inherited breast cancer susceptibility disorder for indigent patients, mobile mammography van for women unable to afford mammograms and numerous other programs.

Register for W4MTP
Online registration is open or bring the registration form to a Saturday training session at the UVA Track or mail the registration form to P.O. Box 5362, Charlottesville 22905 with a check payable to W4MTP. The program is every Saturday from June 19-Aug. 28 at 7:30 a.m. at UVA Track. Online registration accepts credit cards. Training manual and packets can be picked up at ACAC Albemarle Square on June 17 and 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4:30-7 p.m. Bring a water bottle and large towel or folding chair to the track each Saturday.

Running Tips
• Don’t run in thunder and lightening (check the W4MTP website before heading to training to see if it’s canceled).
• If it’s really hot, take extra water.
• If you’re running at night, wear bright, reflective clothing.
• If you’re running alone, make sure someone knows your route.
• Make sure you do a warm-up and a cool down.
• Carry cell phone and take an ID.
• Do not use headphones; be aware of your surroundings.

Fridays After Five; Charlottesville Pavilion.

Fridays After Five is a Charlottesville favorite, that people look forward to all year!  It is a concert series held at the Charlottesville Pavilion (at the end of the Downtown Mall) that is free, and fun for the whole family.  The musical line-up usually includes many great local favorites, with a broad range of types of music to keep everyone entertained.  While the music is great, Fridays After Five also has a lot of appeal as just being a fun social event to enjoy with friends and family.

Hundreds of people flock the Downtown Mall for this event each week- several bringing picnic baskets, blankets, and lawn chairs, to just kick back in the grassy area and enjoy the evening.  It’s also a fun place to meet up with friends, prior to dinner out on the Downtown Mall!

Most people who come either bus, walk, or park in one of the many Downtown Mall parking garages, just don’t park in any of the local business parking lots, as towing is common as a result of how busy these events get!

Fridays has several stands set up with beer and wine, so be sure to bring your I.D. and cash, and there are plenty of non-alcoholic beverages, too.

Insider’s Tip: Definitely bring a blanket, towel, or lawn chair, and you may also consider bringing mosquito spray too!

Will we see you there?

Fridays After Five 2010 Schedule

  • Friday April 14 – Friday September 10, 2010; 5:30P – 8:30P
  • Free for all attendees!  Fun for the whole family.
  • Note- Fridays After Five is held rain or shine!  In the event of rain, there is typically plenty of room under the Pavilion.
